Discussion:
Lack of roku-tech archives bad sign for Roku?

When thinking about buying a Roku I spent some time digging through the
roku-tech
archives, which were extremely helpful in evaluating it's current
working state and future
potential. However, now that I've actually received my Roku, I find
that the archives are offline.
Two days ago I sent email to Roku's support without an answer.

The archive list of the main Roku site has been broken for several days:
http://lists.rokulabs.com/pipermail/roku-tech/

Likewise the external web-based forum for previous posts is also broken:
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.hardware.roku.technical

I can understand that the Roku is more for the hacker/hobbyist than a
polished
appliance, and this is exactly why well supported mailing lists, forums
and archives are so important.
While I'm willing to patient for software to mature and having to do
some extra work to get things working, I'm beginning to be a little
concerned about Roku's inability to restore these archives or/and fix
blatantly broken links on their site.

I've only recently subscribed to this mailing list, so perhaps I've
missed an announcement/previous post.
Are these archives available somewhere else? This seems like a bad
sign, should I return my Roku
before its too late?

Hi Taylor,

Not sure what the problem is with the archive, but I'll look into it! No
cause for alarm. The lights are still on here at Roku Central. :-)

Hi Taylor,

That archive is not broken, it was just disabled. We had a problem
with obfuscating emails properly that is still not completely fixed.
But since Gmane.Org is down, I have tentatively re-enabled this:

http://lists.rokulabs.com/pipermail/roku-tech/

Please try it. I have removed the full download version which was the
original source of email leakage. If you find more email leakage
problems, please let me know.

Taylor> http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.hardware.roku.technical

This is a third-party site which is normally very robust.
Unfortunately, the maintainer is on vacation for a week, so it might
not come back soon.

Thanks!

This is working great. I'm finding all sorts of useful info on NFS
mounts
and 2GB file limits. :)

Glad to hear that it wasn't just broken and I can appreciate not
wanting to encourage spammers.

(If you disable this link in the future, you may want to considering
removing the link from the website
altogether or leading to a message as why it is disabled.)
