There ARE! If I hadn't been taking siesta when it arrived, son, I might
have been the first.

Works fine on ethenet connection, problems so far with wireless to
ethernet adapter. It finds iTunes, but then says connection to server
failed. To get that far I had to disable my firewalls (gulp). Maybe
I'll just have to get a compactflash wifi card.

I second that. They are very different products and I can see where
those who only own one or the other would be annoyed.
Just imagine when there are two of us Soundbridge owners out here ;-)

Check to see if you got a dhcp address on SoundBridge when you are using
your wireless to ethernet adapter. Exit your music library, go to
System Configuration, and select "Show Wired Ethernet Status". Scroll
down and see if it says it is using a DHCP or Link Local address.

If your PC/Mac has DHCP and SoundBridge has LinkLocal then SoundBridge
did not get a DHCP address. If you can solve that problem,
then it will work.

Sherrill, have you tried rebooting the SoundBridge when you see the
"connection to server failed" message? There is a very rare case that can
cause this message to appear and it can only be cleared by rebooting.

Mike,

Didn't help. My system is PC with an SMC2804WBR(G) wireless router.
The adapters I have tried are an SMC2670W which has been working fine
with a ReplayTV and a D-Link DWL-G810 which I have been using with my
HD1000.

As I have said, it works fine if I plug it directly into the 2804
through a cable.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Sherrill

Hi Sherrill,

Check out this link: http://www.rokulabs.com/support/sbaccesspoints.php

Have you updated the firmware in your Access Point to the latest version?
When we tested this AP we found that certain firmware versions did not work
with the SoundBridge. There are an amazing number of bugs out there in
various APs.

Thanks, Anthony,

The SMC2804WBR only shows two firmware versions on their website, 1.10
and 1.11a. I have 1.11a. The adapter, SMC2670W, is also at the latest
firmware, 1.4.

Anthony,

Maybe here is a clue.

When wired ethernet, I have a MAC and IP address and:

Netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.2.1
DNS1 192.168.2.1

When connected by ethernet cable to wireless adapter:

MAC and IP address OK
Netmask 255.255.0.0
Gateway 0.0.0.0
DNS1 0.0.0.0

Adapter is set for DHCP.

Does this shed any light?

Sherrill,

You got a link-local (also known as auto-config) IP address
when using your ethernet to wireless adapter.

I was able to determine this by noticing your netmask
was 255.255.0.0. You'll also note that your IP address
would have started with 169.254.

This is what happens when SoundBridge does not get a DHCP
address. It is part of zero-configuration networking
(www.zeroconf.org) which allows computers to work in the
absence of a DHCP server.

In your case, you wanted to get a DHCP address but did not.
The most likely cause is that your adapter is not configured
properly and is not connecting to your wireless network as you
expect.

Here's what I would do:

Connect the adapter to your computer and verify that it works
there, configuring if necessary. When it is working properly
when connected to your computer, connect it to your
SoundBridge and try again.

I seem to remember a similar problem getting my replayTV to work on this

I've done that (to set up a static IP address). Look in the manual and
you'll see that you can telnet into the Soundbridge using port 4444.
Once in there is an option to set up the ethernet configuration
manually which should let you do what you want.

I used the built in command line telnet utility on the Mac, you may
need to download a telnet utility for your Windows machine if Windows
doesn't come with one.

would have started with 169.254.
This is what happens when SoundBridge does not get a DHCP
address. It is part of zero-configuration networking
( www.zeroconf.org ) which allows computers to work in the
absence of a DHCP server.
In your case, you wanted to get a DHCP address but did not.
The most likely cause is that your adapter is not configured
properly and is not connecting to your wireless network as you
expect.
Connect the adapter to your computer and verify that it works
there, configuring if necessary. When it is working properly
when connected to your computer, connect it to your
SoundBridge and try again.

Hi Sherrill,
http://www.rokulabs.com/support/sbaccesspoints.php
Have you updated the firmware in your Access Point to the
latest version?
When we tested this AP we found that certain firmware
versions did not work
with the SoundBridge. There are an amazing number of bugs
out there in
various APs.

Mike,
Didn't help. My system is PC with an SMC2804WBR(G) wireless router.
The adapters I have tried are an SMC2670W which has been
working fine
with a ReplayTV and a D-Link DWL-G810 which I have been
using with my
HD1000.
As I have said, it works fine if I plug it directly into the 2804
through a cable.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Sherrill
Sherrill, have you tried rebooting the SoundBridge when you see the
"connection to server failed" message? There is a very
rare case that
can
cause this message to appear and it can only be cleared by
rebooting.
Best,
--Mike
There ARE! If I hadn't been taking siesta when it
arrived, son, I might
have been the first.
Works fine on ethenet connection, problems so far with wireless to
ethernet adapter. It finds iTunes, but then says
connection to server
failed. To get that far I had to disable my firewalls
(gulp). Maybe
I'll just have to get a compactflash wifi card.

I second that. They are very different products and I
can see where
those who only own one or the other would be annoyed.
Just imagine when there are two of us Soundbridge owners

The thing is, none of this should be necessary if the bridge is set up and
working correctly. Rather than steering down the path of telnetting into
the box and configuring the address manually (which is not really something
we support or encourage), we should figure out why the bridge isn't working
right.
Post by Steve Martin
I've done that (to set up a static IP address). Look in the manual and
you'll see that you can telnet into the Soundbridge using port 4444.
Once in there is an option to set up the ethernet configuration
manually which should let you do what you want.
I used the built in command line telnet utility on the Mac, you may
need to download a telnet utility for your Windows machine if Windows
doesn't come with one.

Don,
I seem to remember a similar problem getting my replayTV to work on
this network.  In that case, I could manually enter the gateway and
DNS values.  It appears to be posible with the Soundbridge using the
CF card.  Is manual entry possible for the ethernet input?
Sherrill,
You got a link-local (also known as auto-config) IP address
when using your ethernet to wireless adapter.
I was able to determine this by noticing your netmask
was 255.255.0.0. You'll also note that your IP address

The built-in WiFi configuration menus only work with the Wi-Fi CF card.

An external bridge has to be configured independently, since to the
SoundBridge it is just a wired Ethernet connection.

Mike and Steve,

I punted, and telnetted in and set my address information manually.
It's working fine now and I'm happy.

Thanks,

Wouldn't you want the wireless adapter in bridge mode so that the Roku
just sees the main DHCP server on your network?

I'm not sure about the specifics of that adapter or how it can be
configured but I think that is how I would want to try to set it up.
