Discussion:
Announcing the Roku Forums!

Greetings,

We've heard your requests for better organization for the discussion that has
been taking place on this list. To that end we've created the Roku Forums:

http://www.rokulabs.com/forums

As a result of the availability of the forums, we'll be shutting down this
mailing list (at the end of the week. The archives will stay up, however). We
feel that the forums are a better option and are a more accessable format. We
hope that you like the forums and look forward to continuing to take part in the
discussions in the new venue.

Thanks.

Patrick,
will you move the recent messages over to the new forum? I still hope to get
some more response to my postings "AAC or MP3" and " Soundbridge;
Improvements/Feature requests"
So far Soundbridge specific threads here are very low traffic, if you
compare it with the active discussion at the Slim Devices lists. :-(
Hopefully the new Forum will encourage more Soundbridge users to
participate.

We're not planning on trying to import the list archive into the forums. We
will, however, keep the list archive online for people to browse and search.

We too are hoping that the new format encourages participation.

Will roku be providing rss feeds of the forums ? The ability to see the
lastest post would be great.

Web forums suck. Scanning messages that are delivered directly to me
is something I can find the time to do. Remembering to go visit some
forum website on a regular basis and browse around isn't going to happen.
I might do some searches if I have a problem, but I know I'll never
remember to participate in any other way.

It was fun while it lasted,

Ditto, and there is a forum started months ago.

http://rokuforums.myfreebb.com/ - Nice idea.

Not anywhere as much traffic as the mailing list. Can we keep the mailing list?

Can we keep the mailing list?
I think the list needs some work. There seems to be three "camps"
here on the list: SoundBridge users, HD-1000 users, and tech/dev
people. I'm not sure if three lists will work or not, but I don't
think that forums are the best answer. Too many mailing lists is
just as bad as not enough.

Same here. Mail is _definitely_ my preferred method. I'd have no
problem with breaking the mailing list into multiple lists.

I reserve web forums for when I'm searching for something, and almost
never read them regularly because it's too much trouble -- especially
since I use several machines during the week and the browser histories
are not in sync. So for the forums I do read, I end up checking them
only on the weekends at best, and at that point there's so much other
stuff going on that I'm lucky if I end up hitting them once a month.

I feel the same way about email vs. web forums. Perhaps fans of both
media can be satisfied with some sort of mail<->forum gateway? Anyone
know of such a beast for phpbb (the software RokuForums is based on)?
I looked on phpbbhacks.com and nothing popped out at me.

Ok, I'll be the first to stand up on the forum side. I much prefer
being able to follow a thread I am interested in instead of having to
wade through email after email about things I really am not interested
in (like anything related to the Soundbridge or how to get a Mac to act
as a server). Searching always seems to work better on forums as well.

Just my 2 cents.

Do you have a threaded mail reader? For example here's what I see for
this disussion. My mail reader (mutt) groups related messages
together and puts them in thread order:

Searching always seems to work better on forums as well.
In the case of roku-tech this is probably true, though it might just
be the gmane search engine to blame.

One option I've seen on other boards (not sure if the software we have
supports this or not) is the option to "subscribe" to a thread. If there's
a thread that interests you, you click a link, and then you get an email
when the thread has a new message. You still have to go to the web
interface to read the new message, but at least you get a little nudge to
remind you...

Would that work for you, Jay?

I'm looking into a couple of possible plugins that would enable us to
have either an email interface or an nntp interface to our forum
database. I don't know how long it will take to evaluate these, and
once we've evaluated them we may just decide that none of the options
are acceptable. But there is a finite chance that we will have such a
gateway in the future.

If you would like to be notified if and when such a gateway is
available, please send me (not the roku-tech list, since it is going
down) the address to which you would like the announcement sent.

Your fellow email/nntp zealot,
Dave
